In this excerpt from the film, “Silent Harvest”, Christopher Hughes M.D., a transplant surgeon, explores the medical and ethical complexities of liver transplantation from donors after cardiac death (DCD). The liver’s bile ducts are extremely sensitive to oxygen deprivation, making DCD livers challenging to transplant successfully, with only 30% deemed viable. Hughes believes that, in China, prisoners are often kept in reserve and their deaths potentially hastened or incomplete before organ removal, ensuring organ viability. This clip raises profound ethical questions about balancing the urgent demand for transplantable organs with the moral implications of donor death management.
“Silent Harvest” is a documentary produced by the NGO, Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting. It was ten years in the making, featuring in-depth interviews with more than a dozen of medical experts and victims around the world, including medical doctors, bioethicist Prof. Arthur Caplan, former Vice President of the EU parliament Edward McMillan-Scott (UK), world renown transplant surgeons Dr. Zain Khalpey and Dr. Jacob Lavee, Maria A. Fiatarone Singh, liver expert Dr. Christopher B. Hughes, Dr. Charl Els , Dr. Adnan Sharif and others.
